After receiving his MFA
from Syracuse University in 1980, Tom Balbo has developed into
a major American artist in the field of cast paper construction.
Working out of a phenomenal studio in Cleveland, his pieces are
a dramatic combination of reality and abstraction, created
through a unique process of layered pulp paper casting. Balbo
has taught in workshops throughout the country and has had
over 50 national exhibitions. His work most recently was included
in Pulpworks: A Survey of Contemporary Paper Artist at the
Midland Center for the Arts.
"I began using paper as an artistic medium in 1979 and
have found it an almost unlimited source of inspiration and
potential, both in its physical capabilities and
visual qualities. The spatial relationship between the two-dimensional
quality of
surface, the use of color to flatten or expand figure to ground,
and the actual three-dimensional aspect of cast paper all work
to create an object that stands by itself. These works are intended
to create questions in the viewer as to how we perceive space...by
juxtaposing the actual with the referential...texture, with or
without the colorful...and scale, enhanced or defined with detail."
