Whimsey,
wit, and imagination combined with beautiful craftsmanship
describe the unusual sculptures of Wendel Heers. Often searching
junk yards and fields for his materials, the artist creates
novel and interesting works using various combinations of stone,
metal, and wood. Many of his pieces have disguised, moveable
parts with a surprising degree of mobility despite their anchored
appearances, peaking the viewers sense of curiousity and discovery.
A "hands on " exploration
is inevitable, and actually becomes essential to grasping full
enjoyment of each sculpture, a personal participation with the
artist's vision.
Wendel Heers was born in 1924 and attended the University
of Minnesota, where he received both his B.A. and M. A. degrees.
Further study was pursued at the Minneapolis School of Art
and at the School of Vision, Salzburg, Austria under Oscar
Kokoschka. He was a long standing Professor of Art at the University
of Michigan, and served as head of their Art Department for
many years. He is currently retired, still lives in Ann Arbor,
and
continues his sculpture work on a limited basis.
